An Oregon roof spends months wet, grows moss on its shady side, takes winter storms off the Pacific and east winds out of the Gorge, and in the hot, dry summer sits in the sun. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each.
Rain and moss
West of the Cascades a roof can stay wet from fall into spring. Moss roots between asphalt granules and in cedar, holds water against the roof and lifts the edges as it grows. An Interlock panel is smooth, coated aluminum: nothing for moss to root into and nothing to soak up water. Under big firs, needles still collect in valleys and gutters, so we talk through upkeep at the consultation.
Wind
Winter storms off the Pacific and east winds through the Columbia River Gorge work at loose tabs, lifted shakes and exposed screw heads. Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed. Wind resistance is warranted to 120 mph installed to manufacturer specification.
Salt air
From Astoria and Seaside down through Tillamook County, Lincoln City and Newport to Florence, salt air corrodes steel fasteners, flashings and coated-steel roofing at every cut edge and scratch. Aluminum cannot rust. It forms its own thin oxide layer, which re-forms if the surface is scratched.
Snow and ice
In the Cascade foothills, the upper Hood River Valley and the Gorge, a roof carries snow and the occasional ice storm. Interlock panels weigh roughly 0.4 to 0.7 lb per square foot depending on profile, a fraction of natural slate or concrete tile. Smooth aluminum lets snow slide, so we plan snow guards over entries and walkways at the quote. Ice damming is excluded from the material warranty; we look at attic insulation and ventilation with you.
Wildfire
East of the Cascades, in southern Oregon and wherever a home backs onto forest, wind-blown embers are a leading way wildfire reaches a house. Aluminum does not burn, and Interlock offers Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly. Ask about it at your consultation.
Summer sun
The Alunar® finish uses pigments that reflect much of the sun's near-infrared energy: solar reflectance from 0.25 to 0.55 depending on color and thermal emittance of 0.84. Interlock roofs can cut cooling-energy use by up to 25% compared with conventional dark roofing; actual savings vary. The Alunar® finish is warranted for 30 years.

Why this system, in Oregon
Asphalt in Oregon
Months of rain, moss on the shady side and hot summer sun work on asphalt shingles every year: moss lifts the tabs, granules wash into the gutters and edges curl. Moss has nothing to root into on an Interlock roof. It grows in the gaps between asphalt granules and in the grain of cedar, where water stays; an Interlock panel is smooth, coated aluminum that absorbs nothing. Under big trees, needles and leaves can still gather in valleys and gutters, and we talk through that upkeep at the consultation.
Sometimes. A single layer of asphalt can be roofed over only if an inspection finds it suitable; cedar shingles and shakes, concrete tile and natural slate always come off first. We check at the estimate and tell you which applies to your roof.
The manufacturer's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers the material and finish for the original purchaser for as long as they own the home, and it can be transferred once; the second owner is covered to 50 years from substantial completion. Workmanship is not part of that warranty.
